Depends on what background you have in programming and it also depends on what you want to program.

I would recommend .NET as a environment and C# in particular as a language. Easy for windows applications and web applications with ASP.NET. Easy also to use with SQL Server if you're into database stuff. I would say forget about Java if you want something simple because it's too complicated for nothing, especially for web programming. The only advantage of Java over .NET is that it's portable. This means you can run the same application on Linux, Mac OS or Windows for example.

.NET is mainly a Windows thing, although there is now the Mono project to run ASP.NET web applications on Linux machines, but for the desktop applications it only works on Windows for now.

I honestly don't know much about the multimedia part, but if you're talking about graphics and things like that, you can forget about Java. The .NET GDI+ is powerful and easy to use but it's slow in performance. The best thing for graphics is C++. In fact, C++ is the best of all in terms of performance, but it's somehow more complicated to use than C#.
Reply:I prefer Delphi over any other language. Just look at what I created

with Delphi 5: http://www.slx.za.net
Reply:well if you want to be a developer... then Visual basic 6.0 is Finest choice because it's easy to learn and lots of things can be done from here.... C++ is most powerful... hardest one don't try learning it even professionals find it difficult!
Reply:Python can do pretty much anyting, has a clean syntax and is free. Check the site - lots of organizations are using it.
